Review: The Iron Daughter (Iron Fey #2)

The Iron Daughter (The Iron Fey #2) by Julie Kagawa

Publisher: Harlequin Teen, 2010
361 pages, kindle edition
Source: Purchased through Amazon
Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, Romance, Paranormal
Link: Goodreads

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.

Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

My Review:
My first thoughts on this book was that its decent, I think some the appeal of the first one kind of wore off a little on this one, the beginning was good, it was the high pace action turn pager that you can’t put it down but by the middle of the book it gets very slow and it also gets very cheesey, some of the things that were cute in the first one are not cute anymore.

As for the character I established in the first one that I am team Ash I just love Ash but I also Loved Puck, I can see clear as day who can play these 2 characters, I loved all the other character as well.

But all in all it’s a very decent book it is not as good as the first one at all but there are still some things in the book that I really did enjoy and I am looking forward to getting my hands on the last book in the trilogy. Almost everybody I’ve heard talk about this book had said it is the worst one in the trilogy and not to stop with this one because it’s not on a level as the other books. Also I would like to see all the characters develop a little more.

ARC Review: The Curse Keepers (The Curse Keepers #1)

The Curse Keepers (The Curse Keepers #1) by Denise Swank

Publisher: Amazon Publishing, 2013
312 pages, kindle edition
Source: Netgalley
Genre: New Adult, Paranormal, Fantasy, Romance
Link: Goodreads

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
The wall between our world and that of vengeful spirits has protected humanity for more than 400 years. It’s about to come crashing down.

Ellie Lancaster has lived her whole life by the site of the mysterious Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Virginia settlement that vanished without a trace around 1590. Only the descendants of the two men who banished the spirits of an enemy tribe from the material realm know what really happened to the colony. Ellie is one of those descendants—a Curse Keeper. Her father took pains to teach her what he knew of the curse and the responsibilities of its guardians. He taught her that if the two Curse Keepers ever meet, the curse will be lifted, the gate will open, and the raging Native American spirits will be unleashed to seek their revenge.

Despite her father’s seriousness, Ellie has always taken the legend for a harmless fairy tale. Until she meets the darkly handsome, but downright infuriating, Collin Dailey and realizes everything she was told is true. For when they meet, it’s like the air is sucked from the room. Collin’s presence is electrifying… and it’s not just attraction Ellie feels, but the inexorable pull toward her destiny. The prophecy is real, and now Ellie and Collin must battle supernatural forces and their loathing—and passion—for each other to set things right.

The Curse Keepers are all that stand between the world and its destruction.

My Review:
I am a fan of The Curse Keepers and a fan of Denise Grover Swank's other works too. What sets The Curse Keepers and her other works apart from many other books, is Swank's ability to keep the relationship of the two main characters at the forefront. They're not sure if they love or hate each other, but either way the sex is awesome. The secondary characters are believable too. I like that all of the characters are shown in a balance manner with good and bad.

The setting of The Lost Colony is most assuredly present in the storyline and who doesn't love a good unsolved mystery. The pace of the novel has a tension that keeps building through to the end so I feel like I do when walking to Lady Gaga's Applause--kind of like my heart is going to explode--but in the best way!

Review: The Goddess Test (Goddess Test #1)

The Goddess Test (Goddess Test #1) by Aimee Carter

Publisher: Harlequin Teen, 2011

Source: Purchased through the Amazon
Genre: Young Adult, Greek Mythology, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance, Supernatural

Kate is sure he's crazy - until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride and a goddess.

If she fails...

My Review:
The Greek gods are a fun subject. Aimee carter’s The Goddess Test series is another in a long line of highly enjoyable stories about these infamous mythological beings. Her spin on them however is what makes the series sparkle.

In spite of the story being about Kate Winter’s Tests and being the potential future co-ruler of the Underworld, The Goddess test keeps the god talk to a bare minimum, she accomplishes this in part through the modern nomenclature. It is easy to forget that Henry and Hades are one in the same because Henry is such an unassuming name. She also accomplishes this in the ordinariness of life at Eden Manor. Yeap there is magic and power but there is also boredom, school, card games, eating and sleeping, these activities take up a majority of kate’s experiences, thereby minimizing the fantasy.

Then there is Kate. She is everything one wants in a heroine – loyal, steadfast, compassionate, strong, resilient, and so much more. She has a backbone but understands how to pick her battles. She stands by her promises and is not easily distracted. She knows her own mind and is not afraid to stand on her own, even if that puts her in the minority among her peers. Watching her first learn about and then accept her potential new life, one envisions Kate as a fictional Grace Kelly struggling in her transition from actress to queen, for by the end of the story, she is every bit as poised and powerful as Grace was in Monaco. One knows at the very beginning that Kate is special, and it is a delight to watch her blossom into her potential.

Excerpt 1:
Cameron
Meeting with the whiners. Check. Weigh-ins. Check. I’m flipping through the pages and checking off things I’ve completed when I feel her eyes on me.
I don’t look up from my lists, but hear her feet on the carpet and finally the sound of creaking wood as she takes a seat across from me. “You got something to say?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“As long as you make it fast.” Her silence brings my eyes to her contemplative expression.
“I noticed you’re not married.” She tilts her head to my left hand that is very much without a wedding ring.
Not anymore. “And?”
“Nothing really. Just surprised.”
I lean back in my chair as irritation pinches my brows. “Surprised.”
She shrugs. “Yeah, I mean you seem like a decent guy.”
I’m not. “You seem like a decent woman and you aren’t married.” I nod to her empty left ring finger.
She grins. “That’s because I just got divorced. Marriage jumping isn’t my thing.”
This feels like one of those you-share-I-share conversations that I do not participate in. I find if I can bite back my impulsive outbursts and stay zipped people eventually give up.
She twirls a strand of her long blond hair. “Ever been married?”
I lock my jaw and wait, but she doesn’t fucking budge and stares with expectant eyes. Something tells me we’ll be here all day if I don’t give her something. I’d lie, tell her I’ve never been married, but if I plan on digging in here for the long haul, I’m going to have to give her enough to keep her satisfied.
“Once.”
Her eyes light up as if she just realized we belong to the same super-secret club. “Really.”
What is it about sharing that creates this weird expectation from people? As if simply telling another person about your past allows them some special access into friendship. I don’t do friendship.
I flip through my notebook and hope like hell this conversation is headed toward The End.
“Any kids?”
My hand freezes mid page-turn, and a whisper of pain echoes through my gut that would usually be followed by a cringe, but not anymore. I clear my throat and refocus on my notebook. “I have a son.”
“Oh, that’s cool.” She’s silent for a few beats that are probably uncomfortable for her but don’t bother me at all. “I have a daughter.”
The rumble of an old hurt reverberates against my shield. Ten years ago those words would’ve bled me alive, but not anymore. “Mm.”
“How old—”
“Look, I really have a lot to do.” I’m still studying the pages of my notebook like a complete asshole, but honest to God it’s as if we’re about to bust out some knitting needles and tiny sandwiches.
“Sure thing.” She hops up and moves toward the door when she turns suddenly. “Oh, I forgot. We’re having a party after the fight tonight. The Blackout. You should come.”
“Thanks, but”—I flip a page and another—“I think I’ll go home after the fight. Long day.”
“Suit yourself. If you change your mind, we’ll be there.” She’s gone with the soft click of my office door.
After party. Haven’t been to one of those in a while, at least not many I remember. The little flashes I’ve managed to retain carry good feelings of camaraderie with the team. I groan and lean back in my desk chair. My goal is to get back into the octagon, but until then I need to run this organization and put it back on its feet. The fighters got screwed by Gibbs and are having trust issues. I get that. Maybe showing up at this party is a smart move after all. Just for one drink. Should be painless enough.

2 Questions for JB Salsbury

1. What inspired you to start writing the fighting series?
I was a diehard romance reader, and with the advent of the Kindle it opened my eyes to this whole world of Indie romance. At the time there was a lack of MMA romance in the sports romance sub-genre and I thought there aren’t athletes out there that are badder than an MMA fighter. So I decided to give it a shot. Jonah’s character came to me right away and I fell in love with his rough exterior and mushy inside. I thought I’d write one book and see if anyone was interested in reading it and to my surprise, they were! So I just kept going.

2. Do you ever use experiences from real life in your books?
Yes! All the time. It’s not an intentional choice, but often times when I’m writing, a character will take on characteristics of the people in my life and because of that the story will lead into situations I’ve experienced. I can give you some examples.
Rex’s jumping over the fire came from a situation at a college beach party. A guy who I was friends with was trying to impress a girl and he ran full speed and jumped over the enormous bonfire. Needless to say, from that night on they were together for three years.
The scene with Layla drunk in the bar with Eve at the end of Forgive is very similar to what has transpired many times in college with my girlfriends. “I’m a grown woman! I can take care of my—whoa!” *slip, fall*
I’ve had to go bang down a friends door and drag her out after she’d had her heart broken.
A lot of the live music scenes come from the early years when I first met my husband and he was in a punk rock band.
I could go on an on…

Excerpts 2:
With my head down, I make way to my car when I notice a familiar car parked next to mine. I look up and my steps freeze just feet away. Leaning against my car, arms crossed at his chest, long powerful legs crossed at his ankles, is Cameron.
My hand clutches my purse to my side. “Hey, what are you doing here?” I internally scold myself for sounding more defensive than happy to see him. He can’t possibly know what’s in my purse.
It’s been days since I’ve seen him, and our quick telephone conversations do little to slake my desire to see him in the flesh.
He shrugs. “Passing by, saw the place was closed for the night. Thought I’d hang out and see if I could speak to the manager.”
My stomach jumps and goes warm. He came all the way here just to see me?
“Did you have a bad experience? Like to make a formal complaint?”
He pushes off my car and takes two steps toward me. Close, but not close enough. His eyes set in their usual glare, he shoves his hands into the pockets of his dark washed jeans. “Mmm . . .” He rubs his fingers across his lower lip, as he did the night in front of Mason. His eyes burn through me. “I have no complaints about my . . . experience.”
His presence combined with his insinuation become too much and I drop my gaze. A tickle of caution pricks at my subconscious, reminding me that I’m not the kind of girl who shies away from flirtation. I’m not timid, demure, or easily swayed by just any man. But there are a few who have brought me to my emotional knees, and both of them I dislike. Immensely.
His feet move into my line of site, and I pull my gaze up to settle on his face. How is he even more beautiful than I remember with all that thick dark hair, his fierce jaw, and full lips that I know are as powerful as they are soft?
“What’re your plans tonight?” He reaches out and brushes my bangs off my forehead.
Such a tiny gesture, but the sweetness of it makes my eyes flutter. “I was going to grab a bite to eat.”
His eyebrows pinch together. “You hungry? I’ll take you to dinner.”
I look around at the empty parking lot then move my eyes back to his. “Now?”
“You hungry now?”
“Very.”
“Then yeah. Now.”
“But it’s the middle of the night.”
The corner of his mouth lifts so slightly it’s barely noticeable. “It’s Vegas, babe.”
“But I’m in the mood for a bacon cheeseburger.” I lick my lips. I can almost taste the greasy goodness. “With green chilis.” My stomach grumbles in agreement. “And onion rings. Not the battered ones, but those breadcrumb ones.” I hum low in my throat. “Oh, and a chocolate milkshake or an ice cold beer will also do.” I tap my lips, thinking. “Hm. Maybe both.”
So lost in my food-fantasy I don’t notice the way he’s staring at me until I focus on him. His glare isn’t as tight as it usually is, and his mouth isn’t the straight—but full and kissable—line it usually is. It’s as if someone pulled the starch from his expression, not completely relaxed, but tender.
Silence builds between us and I shift on my feet. “Or not, ya know . . . I mean whatever you want is fine too.”
He tilts his head, still not speaking.
“There’s an IHOP down off of—”
“Shut up, Yvette.”
God, I hate that name, but hearing it growled from Cameron’s lips makes it more than tolerable.
“I’m sorry, it’s just . . . Did I say something wrong?”
His lips tilt, tilt, and holy shit, tilt some more, lighting his entire face, the entire city of Vegas, probably the whole damn atmosphere with the most brilliant smile.
“Far from wrong, babe.” He grabs my hand and tugs me to his chest. “I dig a woman who knows what she likes and asks for it.”

My Review
Fighting the fall is a book that I have been look forward to for months. As I read this book and re-read the previous books I get attached even more too all the characters and this book is about our older UFL fighter and new CEO Cameron and Raven’s best friend and sister she has always wanted Eve. Everyone and myself are I our happy places with all these characters.
Eve Dawson is Ravens best friend and sister, she is young and very smart she has taken on a lot of responsibility and life experience for someone her age. Eve has sworn off all men altogether and it is all for a good reason. She doesn’t want to go there again. Eve is fine by herself, she doesn’t even have the lady desires to be with any man right now. That is until she lays eyes on Cameron Kylie himself, and for the first time since she was born and she feels this strong pull to him and it is like they are drawn together.

“I always want more. That’s my problem I want to be the girl that a man can't live without.”

Cameron Kylie’s UFL career as a professional fighter has been over for years a while ago and that was not by any choice from him. But he is having a really hard time accepting that fact the he can’t fight anymore, and the effects have had a huge impact on his own life and his family’s lives. Cam has not had any real relationship for any length of time, but he has good reasons as well. He is dealing with his ex-wife and a lot of baggage from his past. He knows he would not be good for someone like eve, but he can’t seem to stay away. When he is with Eve he starts to truly feel something, something other than sadness, defeat or regret and that has not happened for a long time.

”The octagon is my first love the only place I truly feel alive. My life is fighting. What the hell do I do now?”

A centuries-old battle between fallen angels and the protectors of humanity has chosen its new warrior. It’s a fight Violet doesn't want, but she lives her life by two rules: don't run and don't quit. When angels seek vengeance and humans are the warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden…

Embrace is about Violet Eden, her mum died the day she was born and on her 17th birthday weird things start happening. She is having weird dreams and she gets cuts from these dreams and these markings start to appear on her wrists. she also gets a letter from her mum that her father has been saving for this occasion, it talks a lot about heap of things and she finds out this majorly huge secret that the one person in her life that was her anchor and his name is Lincoln.

When she finds out this secret that he knew and she doesn't know who she can trust anymore and she also meets new people and also meets this new guy Phenix. I really loved this book I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about it, but I wasn't going to let those reviews get to me. This book had awesome quotes, awesome moments sad, angry and happy.

I loved how different this book is to other storylines that feature angels, I loved all the characters, Im extremely a big sucker for love triangles the fact that it had that it was entertaining as hell for me, I thought it was just dark and a lot of things were happening left, right and centre it was a slow book but it kept going and going and going and was great.

Review: Crash (Crash #1)

Crash (Crash #1) by Nicole Williams

Publisher: Haperteen/Harpercollins, 2012
384 pages, paperback
Source: Purchased through Book Depository
Genre: Young Adult, New Adult, Romance, Contemporary, Chick Lit

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Southpointe High is the last place Lucy wanted to wind up her senior year of school. Right up until she stumbles into Jude Ryder, a guy whose name has become its own verb, and synonymous with trouble. He's got a rap sheet that runs longer than a senior thesis, has had his name sighed, shouted, and cursed by more women than Lucy dares to ask, and lives at the local boys home where disturbed seems to be the status quo for the residents. Lucy had a stable at best, quirky at worst, upbringing. She lives for wearing the satin down on her ballet shoes, has her sights set on Juilliard, and has been careful to keep trouble out of her life. Up until now.

Jude's everything she needs to stay away from if she wants to separate her past from her future. Staying away, she's about to find out, is the only thing she's incapable of.

For Lucy Larson and Jude Ryder, love's about to become the thing that tears them apart.

My Review:
Lucy Larson is an elite belle dancer which is all she wants to be in life and in her future, with a very dysfunctional family cause by a family tragedy which is causing her way more problems than she wants, she really doesn't want or need her life to change way more than it needs to be. Starting a new school after her summer break, Lucy meets Mr. Bad Boy Jude Ryder and its instant cliche love at first sight. But the funny thing is he does not do the whole girlfriend thing, Jude doesn't do anything but I’ll give you 3 guesses….except committing felonies and giving people a hiding.

But Lucy and Jude have a connection that some people just can’t explain but you know that is unquestionable, but with all the warnings he has given her to stay away. Ms Lucy Larson just can’t resist temptation of the guy who is a big rebel, she is spending her whole school year ruining her future just to be with him. Crash is very addictive love story that funny enough you can’t seem to want to put down when you begin to read the first word. I so badly want to make a better Jude just as much as Lucy wants to, but I also hurt as bad as she does when everything doesn't go to according her plan.

Review: The Iron King (The Iron Fey #1)

The Iron King (The Iron Fey #1) by Julie Kagawa

Publisher: HarperTeen, 2009
363 pages, Paperback
Source: Borrowed from the local Library

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan sense that everything she's known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth - that she us the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

My Review:

This book was outstanding. I mean really...I was totally enthralled from the start all they way through to page 368 the finish. I am just blown away at the sheer awesomeness that emits from this book.

First off I'm a huge fae fan, especially love reading this type of story. But at the same time, when it come to a book about fae there are a lot similarities. Many books share the same mythology, the summer court and winter court, references to Midsummer Night Dream....the Iron King has these elements, and yet...Kagawa totally makes it her own thing. She created this strangely unique world with even stranger inhabitants....just magical! There was no way to anticipate what Meghan would encounter next.

Absolutely loved Meghan's character. Strong, independent, stubborn, selfless. This is the kind of character that you want to read about, the kind of character that you admire. Not to mention the absolutely compelling cast of supporting characters....Puck, Ash and Grimalkin. There aren't many times, especially in a debut, that I find myself genuinely enjoying and being impressed with all the characters. There are usually one or two that really stand out, and the others fade in the background, that's not the case with the Iron King.

This book has it all...action, romance, humor, intrigue not to mention its's exceptionally written.

This is part of a trilogy, but the first book wraps up nicely and set up perfectly for the next novel, the Iron Daughter. Absolutely recommend this book! heads up its ADDICTING!!!!

Review: Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy #1)

Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy #1) by Wendy Higgins

Publisher: HarperTeen, 2014

385 pages, Paperback
Source: Purchased through BookDepository

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Embrace the Forbidden.

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels. Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She's aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn't until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put on the test. He's the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

My Review:

This book was addicting. I couldn't put the bloody thing down, I was hooked from page one. This book will have your heart racing and sitting on the edge of your seat.

I was so irrevocably in love with all the characters. The characters to me are what made this book so damn great. I loved each and every single one of them. You have your main character Anna, who knows that she has special abilities, but doesn't exactly understand them or know why she even has them. As she tries to understand what is happening to her and who she really is, she meets Kaiden Rowe. He seems to have all the answers. Their relationship was so much fun to read. At first Anna finds him so attractive, and then the next she couldn't stand him. Kaiden was very blunt with Anna. He didn't pretend to be someone he was so not and didn't sugar coat bloody anything. How could you not fall for him? I really thought after their first meeting that the story would jump into an insta-boom-love and I would really be annoyed by Kaiden and Anna's relationship, but it was far from it.

Later in the story you meet four other character who are just like Kaiden and Anna. I thought it would be a little hard to keep up with all the new characters, but it really wasn't. Higgins did such an awesome job bringing each individual character to life. She also has a way with words when it comes to descriptions. I was easily able to picture certain parts of the book and get a feel for every emotion Anna experienced. I cannot forget about Anna's father. As a romance addict, I would love to read a story about him and his love for Anna's mother.

I really loved the book. I jumped into it expecting it to go in so many different directions and was taken by surprise at every turn and twist. The story Higgins delivered is so refreshing and unique, it was exactly what I wanted!!!!!

Obviously you'll be limited by what you can get your grubby little paws on, but what books do you really want to read? What books would you be sad you missed if couldn't read them any more?
